The Suez is important not only to the Asia-North Europe/Med trade but also to growing volumes of Asia cargo heading for the US East Coast. Drewry Maritime Research compiled a report last week on what the impact on the lines would be if the East-West waterway were blocked.

On 26 April 1956, the ship Ideal X departed Port Newark, New Jersey on a voyage to Houston, Texas. The ship had been launched in 1945 as the T-2 tanker SS Potrero Hills. The ship had made many voyages in the intervening eleven years, but this was different.

The Thames Barrier is a 1,710-foot wide movable flood control barrier across the River Thames just downstream from central London. After a ten-year construction period, it was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on May 8, 1984.

The DNV Quantum report also considers many propulsion aspects that were not covered in our previous Quantum report, therefore we call this one Quantum 2. Conventional container ship designs usually go for maximum hull speed requiring highest practicable engine power.

Neptune Orient Lines just reported a loss of US$741 million for 2009. China Shipping Container Lines is expected to soon announce a loss of US$1 billion. Other results will begin to trickle in but no carrier handling containers will have done well last year.
