Established in 1969, the Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City, Michigan, is the youngest of the six state maritime academies in the United States. Like the others, it educates and trains individuals for careers as officers in the US Merchant Marine.

SBX-1 is the US Navy designation for its self-propelled radar vessel. The designation is short for Sea-Based X-Band Radar-1. The vessel started life as a CS-50 twin-hull semi-submersible drilling rig. It was built in the Vyborg shipyard in Russia in 2002.

Nikumaroro (previously known as Gardner Island) is a small coral atoll in the central Pacific Ocean situated just south of the Equator and just west of the 180th meridian. It lies in the Phoenix Island Chain and is part of the Republic of Kiribati.
