I just discovered that December is actually quite a nice time to be in Monaco. The temperatures are certainly fresher than during the Monaco Yacht Show in September. And those supermodels hanging on the arms of their chubby, balding, middle-aged escorts seem to be somewhere else…

It’s been an ironic couple of weeks for superyachts and frankly, I don’t quite know what to make of it all. First Warren Buffett bought BNSF www.bnsf.com , then Nordhavn www.nordhavn.com finally sold it’s first 120 foot long, er, “trawler” joining…

This according to the 14 November TELEGRAPH ( THE London TELEGRAPH that is www.telegraph.co.uk , not to be confused with the Macon, Georgia, USA TELEGRAPH www.macon.com ). The piece suggests that Abramovich is a perhaps a mite peeved that his…

Not much gets past my Rottweiler Spam Filter. But no matter how many times I classify the sender as “SAFE”, messages from the NRA (National Rifle Association) somehow always have to be rescued. Conversely, once in a while my faithful spam filter…

Nestled in the sunset’s shadow cast by Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Nelly’s Ford, (NOT referring not to a certain “un-stimulussed” US auto maker), Virginia, USA is just about as un-nautical place as you can be unless you count Sperry Marine’s…

Well, there’s just one more day to go at the Fiftieth FLIBS (The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show www.showmanagement.com/fort_lauderdale_international_boat_show_2009/event ). And thank heavens because it’s stinking, lousy hot – almost 90 degrees with more than that in humidity…

Although the audience and panelists were of very international origins and certainly there were accents from Australia and New Zealand, the Middle East and Far East seemed a bit thin on the ground this week at the BOAT INTERNATIONAL Superyacht Design Symposium www.superyachtdesignsymposium.com .

BOAT INTERNATIONAL’s (“BI”) Superyacht Design Symposium www.superyachtdesignsymposium.com is in New York City today and tomorrow. It will be a good opportunity to take the temperature of the Superyacht Industry in North America. Two days later begins the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show…

As a business coach, I have learned that some VC’s (or “venture capitalists” - sorry if you already knew that but you might have thought I meant Viet Cong; yes I AM that old but I was in Submarines remember ) can be to some business owners they finance as boats in general are to boat owners.

There’s nothing like a little – or perhaps a lot, in this current economic climate – of financial adversity to stimulate (and I’m coming to hate THAT word) business discipline and creativity. For years the superyacht industry clung to a mantra of fun rather than bottom line.

The piece opened with the observation that, “Nearly one in five users of the UK Ship Register say they are unhappy with the service provided by the UK flag,” as observed in the annual report of the UK’s own Maritime and Coast Guard Agency or “MCA” to the nautical cognoscenti.

Two quite different items at the top of the newsletters that I receive each day made me burst out laughing yesterday. The first conjures up a scene from the Disney’s first PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. Somali pirates attacked, unsuccessfully of course, a 160-metre (525-foot) French Navy ship.

In the world of Superyachts, perfect is just not good enough, as anyone who has had the opportunity to see yacht crew members clean using Q-Tips – no, REALLY – can testify. It’s both a question of pride of ownership and also getting the highest…

From a marketing standpoint, the superyacht industry must seem full of ironies and contradictions which make the top marketing jobs at Coke or McDonalds seem like walks in park. In the first place, the need to own a superyacht, certainly for many owners…

It depends on to whom you talk and even then reality is something completely different – in superyachts at least. As the air-conditioned carpeted tents (or marquees, if you prefer) were coming down Saturday evening in Port d'Hercule Harbour…

I apologise that this posting is late. One of the things that gets always seems to get overtaxed in Monaco, if certainly not the residents, is the bandwidth during the yacht show. Usually it’s only the mobile phones and even then, only between two and four thirty in the afternoon.

Well, I’m finally on my way to the annual superyacht version of Mecca, the Monaco Yacht Show www.monacoyachtshow.com , arriving there tonight from Caen via Paris. I’m going by train. Caen, I have just discovered, is pronounced something like “Kahn” - I had been pronouncing it (Kye Yen).

You’re not in the superyacht industry very long before you start noticing all the hyperbole –newest, most luxurious, most whatever and of course biggest, which usually translates into longest (LOA, curiously I’ve never noticed anyone in the…

Early returns from the Cannes Boat Show seem a bit disappointing, unless you hate crowds, a news item commenting on no feet on lots of empty red carpet. More reliably on that subject, as he left the Cannes show for his base in Italy, I received…
